Galley Group Brings New Food Hall to Pittsburgh's North Shore
Galley Group, the driving force behind popular Pittsburgh food hall and restaurant incubator, Smallman Galley, announced the opening of Federal Galley—home to four new culinary concepts and a beer garden. The 7,500-square foot space is housed inside the North Shore’s Nova Place, a 30-acre mixed-use campus that recently underwent a $100 million renovation.
Federal Galley is the second development from Galley Group founders Benjamin Mantica and Tyler Benson. “North Shore and the North Side community were already on our radar and then to see the exciting things happening at Nova Place—we just couldn’t have found a better spot to call home for Federal Galley,” says Mantica.
Staying true to Galley Group’s mission, Federal Galley is a launch pad where new culinary concepts are brought to fruition in a low risk, low cost environment. The four restaurants range in scope from vegetable-forward fare to Detroit-style Pizza, to pan-Mexican cuisine. Federal Galley will open with the following:
Smallman alumnus Stephen Eldridge and partner Susan Cope bring two concepts to Federal Galley: Provision and El Lugar. Provision opens with many of the beloved favorites it offered at Smallman Galley such as the The Burger made with cheddar, parmesan Frica, umami aioli, and smoked mushrooms, which was rated one of the top in the city. El Lugar, a concept inspired by the couple’s travels to Mexico as well as their time living in Arizona and San Francisco, offers a vibrant menu with dishes such as the Bloody Mary Ceviche, Pork Pibil Tacos and Green Chile Enchiladas.
Michigan natives Kristen Calverley and Nate Peck joined the Pittsburgh restaurant scene in 2012 and are now bringing Michigan & Trumbull, a Detroit-style pizza concept, to Federal Galley. The menu opens with a variety of pizzas, like the Packard Pepperoni with red sauce, mozzarella, pickled chilis, pepperoni and house-made hot-honey, and the Cass Corridor Veggie pizza, a vegan offering featuring changing seasonal ingredients.
Supper is a new American, fast-casual concept led by Vincent Perri, who previously led as the Executive Chef at Pittsburgh’s Revel + Roost. Over half of Perri’s menu is dedicated to vegan and gluten-free items, including a Veggie Burger with a black bean and soy tempeh patty, almond “queso,” tomato jam, and fall greens all on a potato roll. With a true focus on ingredients and a “made from scratch” mentality, Supper presents guests with simple yet hearty flavors. The Poutine—made with emerald valley cheese curd and truffled beef gravy, and served with duck fat fries—is sure to be an early favorite.
The beverage program, led by Galley Group Beverage Director Tim Garso and Bar Manager Cat Cannon, offers 30 taps that, in addition to local beers, features select wine and cocktails on draft. The beer menu brings a diverse list of local brews as well as exciting varieties from breweries around the country. The cocktail program showcases a selection of original cocktails inspired by specific global regions, as well as a list of lesser-known classics. To open, the team has prepared four cocktails inspired by flavors and classic dishes from the Philippines, one of which, called the Luya, is made with Maggie’s Farm white rum, Big Spring coconut rum, Aperol, ginger-lychee cordial and lime. The Allegheny, prepared with Wild Turkey 101 bourbon, Marie Brizard Blackberry, Noilly Prat dry vermouth and lemon, is designed to unearth a more “unexplored” classic cocktail.
Federal Galley, designed by Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects, is located in a former stand-alone bank building on North Shore’s Nova Place campus. The 190-seat space promotes a welcoming, communal environment that blends the natural, raw building structure with a contemporary design. The reclaimed wood walls meld harmoniously with the industrial touches of the old bank, like its original vault door, which remains in the food hall. Retractable garage doors open to the outdoor beer garden, adding an additional 100 seats in warm weather.
