Restaurant Sciences LLC, an independent firm that closely tracks food and beverage product sales throughout the foodservice industry in North America, unveiled that May on-premise wine sales were estimated at $1 billion. 

Annually, May is the top month for On-Premise wine sales, with 6 percent more volume sales compared to an average month. Even with the strong sales in May, 2013 has showed wine case sales ranging from flat to slightly up compared to 2012 wine case sales.

"Once again, May proved to be a banner month for on-premise wine sales with Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day and graduations contributing to the top month in wine volume sales," says Chuck Ellis, CEO and president of Restaurant Sciences. "As consumers shift to white wines for spring, Chardonnay sales continue to grow and are outselling the top red varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, by 4.1 share points in May 2013."

The top varietals for May include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Grigio with volume market shares of 11.1 percent, 7 percent, and 5.8 percent respectively.
